Ulf Schirmer is the new Music Director of Oper Leipzig

Ulf Schirmer, artistic director of the Münchner Rundfunkorchester, will become the new Music Director at the Oper Leipzig with the start of the season 2009/10. His contract will run until 2014.

Already in 2006, Ulf Schirmer had musically rehearsed „Parsifal" at the Oper Leipzig, a production he is currently conducting again there. His first production for the coming season in Leipzig will be Wagners „Lohengrin", directed by Peter Konwitschny. In addition, Ulf Schirmer will conduct in 2009/10 the concertante performances of „Das Rheingold", followed by a choir concert and a number of repertoire performances from „Die Zauberflöte", „La Bohème", „Hänsel und Gretel" and „Carmen".

Gewandhaus Director of Music Riccardo Chailly was very pleased with the decision for Ulf Schirmer: „I have met Maestro Schirmer these days and we have a good mutual musical understanding. I have expressed my best wishes to Maestro Schirmer for success and energy for his new position in Leipzig." The chairman of the board of the Gewandhaus orchestra, Heiner Stolle, said: „The Gewandhaus orchestra members welcome the appointment of Ulf Schirmer as Music Director of Oper Leipzig and are looking forward to an intense cooperation. The resumption of Richard Wagners opera ‚Parsifal' has shown that we can find a common musical language and we will certainly be able to use it well for the repertoire of the Oper Leipzig."

Ulf Schirmer adds: „Achieving special musical quality always requires responsibility, ideal artistic leadership and constructive cooperation. I am looking forward to the challenge at the Oper Leipzig with particular delight!"
